I take pleasure in presenting hereunder an article on the legendary Steve Jobs, written prior to his demise recently. This Should be an inspiration and motivation for all those looking for challenges in life.

The Life and Times of the Legendary Steve Jobs

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned, handing the reins of the company he co-founded over to his long-time right hand man, Tim Cook. At his retirement, Apple had eclipsed oil giant Exxon Mobil as the world’s largest corporation, with a $350 billion market capitalization and nearly $80 billion in cash. Steve Jobs’ storied life and career is legendary, and truly a case where the truth is stranger, and more inspiring, than fiction. Steve Jobs was all of these – a college dropout who recycled bottles just to make ends meet, a vegetarian Buddhist who frequently experimented with LSD, a pariah exiled from his own company and finally the founding father of three seminal products – the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad – which would redefine the landscape of personal computing forever. Now, as Jobs retires and the entire Wintel empire, which marginalized Apple during the 1980s and 1990s, lies shattered and broken in burning pieces at his feet, let’s take a look back at the life of the man who has been called the Walt Disney, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison of our time.
In 1955, the boy who would become Steve Jobs was given up for adoption by a Syrian father and an American mother, and adopted by the Jobs family in Mountain View. As a high school student, he frequently attended Hewlett-Packard lectures, working there part-time one summer. It was during that fateful summer that Jobs met the other Steve – Steve Wozniak, Jobs’ so-called “partner in crime”. The two Steves would remain friends for life, although it would be decades before their brainchild, Apple, would be born. Jobs dropped out of college after one semester, slept in friends’ rooms, recycled cans and bottles for pocket money, and ate free meals at a local Hare Krishna temple. It was there that Jobs was introduced to Buddhist philosophies, and he decided to travel to India in search of spiritual enlightenment. After saving up money from a brief stint at the fledgling video game maker Atari, Jobs traveled to India and became a practicing Buddhist, returning with a shaved head and donning traditional Indian clothing. Jobs openly acknowledges that he experimented frequently with LSD, calling it one of the most important experiences in his life.
In 1976, the two Steves and investor Ronald Wayne founded Apple Computers. Wayne was the “adult supervision” for the two Steves, who were both in their early 20s – similar to Google’s triumvirate of one adult (Schmidt) and two kids (Page and Brin). However, a mere two weeks later, in one of the worst business decisions in history, Wayne relinquished his 10% stake, then worth $800. Had Wayne held onto his shares, his investment would be worth more than $35 billion today. After several years of increasing profitability, Jobs lured PepsiCo president John Sculley to become the CEO of Apple in 1983, famously asking him, “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?”
Sculley was Apple’s greatest asset in its formative years. He was responsible for increasing the company’s annual revenue from $800 million to $8 billion within ten years. Sculley was the mastermind behind Apple’s famed “1984” advertisement which took aim at IBM’s dominance of the personal computer market. He spread adoption of the Macintosh and raised its price to increase profit margins. However, Sculley was soon butting heads with Jobs over Jobs’ “non-linear” management style. In 1985, a power struggle between Jobs and Sculley ended with the Board of Directors ousting Jobs three months before his 30th birthday.
Being kicked out of Apple didn’t slow down Jobs one bit, though. In 1985, he founded his own computer company, NeXT, which produced very expensive, state of the art machines years ahead of the technological curve. It was with these computers that Jobs showed his aesthetic craftsmanship and minimalist sensibilities. His NeXTCube, enclosed in a sleek magnesium cube, was pure eye candy compared to the clunky Wintel machines that dominated the early 1990s. However, these machines proved to expensive to manufacture on a large scale, and by 1993, he had only sold 50,000 units. While NeXT was a failure, Jobs made one of his most important investments during this time. In 1986, Jobs purchased The Graphics Group, a computer graphics subdivision of Lucasfilm, for $10 million. This company, under Jobs’ guidance, would evolve into Pixar – the CGI giant that produced such hits as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, and countless other family friendly films. In 2006, his $10 million investment was purchased by Disney for $7.4 billion in stock, making Jobs Disney’s largest shareholder with a 7% stake.
Meanwhile, back at Apple, Jobs’ nemesis Sculley was ousted by the Board of Directors in 1993, after years of shrinking margins and profitability. Sculley was blamed for waging a pointless, costly war against IBM and the irreparable fragmentation of its product line, which offered too many variants of its core Macintosh line, baffling and alienating consumers. Apple replaced Sculley with Gil Amelio, who didn’t fare much better than his predecessor. Amelio stated, “Apple is like a ship with a hole in the bottom, leaking water, and my job is to get the ship pointed in the right direction.” Unfortunately for Amelio, a mutiny ensued and the crew tossed the captain overboard in 1996. Before he was replaced, however, Amelio purchased Jobs’ NeXT Computers for $429 million, paving the way for Jobs’ return. Jobs became the interim CEO in 1997, and by 2000 he had become the permanent CEO.
After ironically borrowing $150 million from his friend and fellow “Pirate of Silicon Valley”, Bill Gates, Jobs immediately axed several unprofitable ventures, such as the Newton (which would become the prototype for the iPad), Cyberdog and OpenDoc to shed dead weight. He then launched the first “i” product – the all-in-one computer, the iMac, in 1998. With the iMac, designed by award-winning product designer Johnathan Ive, Jobs started the theme of sleek minimalist products in an assortment of basic colors. Ive’s aesthetic theme would eventually carry over to the next major product – the iPod, and make its way into the iPhone and iPad as well. Ive’s designs have been credited as the primary reason for the brisk sales of modern Apple products. Together, Jobs and Ive were able to capture the MP3 player industry nearly instantly with the iPod in 2001, the mobile handset industry with the iPhone in 2007, and the previously non-existent tablet market with the iPad in 2010. His moves into the smartphone and tablet markets were sharply criticized at first, by cynics who believed that the computer maker would crash and burn in unfamiliar markets, but Jobs proved them wrong with his remarkable ability to time product releases and cycles with near perfection.
Even as Jobs retires, Apple’s product line is guaranteed for at least another two years. When Jobs returned to Apple as a prodigal son, Apple shares were worth $4. Today they close in on $400. Whether or not Apple will survive the next decade without his innovation remains to be seen, but Jobs’ success as an entrepreneur and technological savant has already made him a modern day legend.

Put the Glass Down

A professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see & asked the students. "How much do you think this glass weighs?"

'50gms!.... '100gms!' .....'125gms'

The students answered differently.

"I really don't know unless I weigh it," said the professor, "but,
my question is:

What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?"

'Nothing'. The students said.

'Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the
professor asked.

'Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the student

"You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?"

"Your arm could go numb; you might have severe muscle stress &
paralysis & have to go to hospital for sure. ?.. Ventured another student &
all the students laughed

"Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?"

Asked the professor.

'No', was the answer.

"Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?"

The students were puzzled.

 "What should I do now to come out of pain?" asked professor again.

"Put the glass down!" said one of the students

"Exactly!" said the professor.

Life's problems are something like this.

Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK.

Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache.

Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able
to do anything.

It's important to think of the challenges or problems in your life, but EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to 'PUT THEM DOWN' at the end of every day before YOU GO TO SLEEP.

That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh & strong& can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!

An Explanation of Credit Cards and Related Issues

Credit cards are an extremely useful way of paying for products and services. They are often more convenient than cash or checks, and they are almost universally accepted (including over the phone). Additionally, they are a great way for you to establish your creditworthiness. And some cards offer additional benefits, such as rebates, frequent flier miles, and insurance.
But credit cards are a mixed blessing. They can encourage excessive spending (which often results in serious financial pain for those who carry balances). Also, the interest starts accumulating immediately for new purchases on credit cards with balances. Additionally, unlike most loans, credit card debt doesn’t have a required repayment schedule, which can be a temptation to pay only the minimum amount required and never pay off the full amount owed. The system is designed this way; credit card companies make most of their profits from cardholders who pay just the minimum amount required, since they charge exorbitantly high interest rates on the money owed.
We recommend credit cards only for those who intend to pay off the balance each month. Let’s face it: It can take just a few months to get into financial trouble and years to get out. Those who don’t pay off the entire balance every month get penalized in two ways:
  1. they continuously pay interest on the outstanding balance, plus
  2. they pay interest immediately on any new purchases (as opposed to those who pay the balance each month, who are extended a grace period during which no interest is charged).
Although debt is sometimes useful, there is a difference between good debt (a home, car, education, etc.) and bad debt (money borrowed with no specific plan of repayment, such as with credit cards, debt consolidation or overspending in all areas of a budget). Even though debt is a part of life, the key to preventing it from becoming destructive is knowing the benefits and hazards of using credit.
In the United States, Visa and MasterCard are the two most common brands of credit cards. However, neither Visa nor MasterCard actually issues their cards. Instead, they provide advertising, credit authorization and record keeping services for their partners, who are authorized to issue the cards and specify the terms of their programs. This is why there are so many different credit card offers, and why it’s important to shop around.
Types of Credit Cards
In addition to standard credit cards, you should also consider three other types of cards: a debit card, a secured card, and a non-revolving credit card.
  • With a debit card, you don’t actually have a line of credit extended to you. Instead, you make purchases with money that’s already in your bank account. That way there’s no risk that your card use will put you in debt, because your usage is limited to the amount you have in your account. Debit cards come in two types: direct (which requires a PIN for use) and deferred (which requires a signature for use). The deferred card is accepted at a larger number of locations. One drawback is that you’ll need to record each transaction in your checkbook, so you’ll know how much you have left in your account to write checks against. In addition, debit cards don’t offer a grace period as some credit cards do, and some issuers charge a fee each time you use the card.
  • With a secured card, you have a collateral savings account backing the card. This gives the card issuer some protection, since they will be able to liquidate those savings and apply them to the balance if you default on your credit card payments. Secured cards are common among consumers who have poor credit or no credit, and can’t get a standard credit card (yet).
  • With a non-revolving credit card, you can make charges just as you would any other credit card, but you have to pay your balance in full every month. Of course, you have the option to pay your balance every month with any credit card (and in fact that’s what we recommend), but for a non-revolving credit card it’s a requirement. The most popular non-revolving credit card is American Express.
All three cards are designed to prevent the cardholder from running up credit card debt, and for this reason we recommend them, especially for anyone who doesn’t feel completely in control of their spending habits.

1.    A starts from a place at 11.00 a.m. and proceeds at a speed of 4 kmph. B starts at 1 p.m. with initial speed of 1 kmph and increases his speed every hour. At what time will B catch up with A?    

Answer: 9.48 p.m.

Hence between 9 and 10 p.m. B will catch A.  At 9 P.m. B ‘s speed was 8 kmph and between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. his speed will be 9 kmph. A’s sped continues to remain at 4kmph.

So the relative speed between B and A at this time is 5 kmph. At 9.00 p.m. A is ahead of B by 4 km. Hence to catch up with him B will take  4 / 5 hours.
Ie 0.8 hours or 48 minutes. Hence B will catch up with A at 9.48 p.m.  

2.    Working independently Tina and Ann could finish a job in 12 hours and 9 hours respectively. If Tina works on the job independently for 8 hours and then Ann starts working independently on the same job, in how much time would Ann complete the job?

Answer: 3 hours.

Tina takes 12 hours to complete the job. In one hour she does 1/12 job and in 8 hours she had completed 8/12 = 2/3 job.
Hence remaining job is 1/3.
Ann takes 9 hours to complete a job. So, in one hour she does 1/9 job.
For completing th remaining 1/3 job she will take (1/3) / (1/9) = 3 hours.

3.    If a = 2, b = 4 and c = 5 then what is a + b / c  - c/a + b.

Answer: 11/30    This question had confused a few since the official answer was not tallying with their working.

Actually the question if looked at as (a + b) / c  -  c / (a + b) would give you the right answer.
4.    10^2 (10^8 + 10^8) =10^4 x ?   ( I have reframed the question so that there is no confusion in the mind of the students)

Answer: 2 * 10^6

10^2 * 2(10^8) = 2 * 10^2 x 10^8 = 2 * 10^10. Hence

2 * 10^10 = 10^4 x 2 * 10^6

5.    The maximum number of students among whom 1001 pens and 910 pencils can be distributed in such a way that each student get the same number of pens and pencils is:

Answer: 91  (Simple logic:  HCF of 1001 and 910 )

6.    The total population of a town was 8000. In one year the population increased by 9%.However, the Male population increased by 10% and the female population increased by 8%. How many males were there in the town initially?

Answer: 4000

Let the male population be x and female population be y. We know that x + y = 8000
Hence the female population y = 8000-x.
The men increases by 10% and the women increases by 8% and the total population increases by 9%.
So, we have an equation

x + 10x / 100 + (8000 – x) +8(8000-x)/100 = 8000 + 8000 x 9/100

Working out you will get the value of x as 4000.

7.    1000 boys and 800 girls took an examination. 60% of the boys an 50% of the girls passed the examination. What is he percentage of students who have not passed the examination?

Answer: 44.44%

Out of 1000 boys 60% passed ie 600 students. No. of boys failed 400
Out of   800 girls  50% passed ie 400 students. No. of girls  failed 400.
Total number of students failed is 800 out of total number students appeared 1800
Hence percentage of students failed is 800*100/1800 = 44.44%

8.    A company contracts to paint three houses. Mr Brown can paint a house in 6 days. Mr Black would take 8 days while Mr Blue will take 12 days to paint the house. Mr Brown starts the work and continues for 8 days and then leaves. Mr Black takes up the work, and works or 6 days and leaves. Now Mr Blue will be completing the contract in how many days?

Answer: 11 days.

Total job to be completed under the contract is 3 (houses)

Mr Brown in 1 day can do 1/6 job. So, in 8 days has done 8/6 or 4/3 job.

Mr Black in one day can do 1/8 job and in 6 days does 6/8 or ¾ job.

So Mr Brown and Mr Black together have completed 4/3 + ¾ = 25/12 job or 2 and 1/12 job. The remaining job is 11/12.

Mr Blue in one day can do 1/12 job and for completing the remaining 11/12 job would take 11 days.

9.    Two hours after a freight train leaves Delhi, a passenger train starts from the same station and in the same direction at a speed of 60 kmph. The passenger train overtakes the freight train in four hours. What is the speed of the freight train?

Answer: 40 kmph
 A simple sum. In 4 hours the passenger train would have travelled 4*60=240 kms

The freight train left 2 hours earlier than the passenger train. Hence to travel this distance of 240 kms, the freight train hd taken 2 + 4 = 6 hours.
Hence the speed of the freight train was 240 / 6 = 40 kmph.  

10.  A man fixed an appointment to meet the Manager. The Manager asked him to come two days after the day before the day after tomorrow. If today is Friday, then on what day the Manager fixed the appointment?

Answer: Monday. (Simple logic. Please note that this is a repeat question in many papers)

Procurement cycle



The 10 Steps of the Procurement Cycle
Management in any company must understand the art of obtaining products and services. The procurement cycle follows specific steps for identifying a requirement or need of the company through the final step of the award of the product or contract. Responsible management of public and corporate funds is vital when handling this necessary process, whether in strong or weak economic markets. Following a proven step-by-step technique will help management successfully achieve its goals.
Step 1: Need Recognition
The business must know it needs a new product, whether from internal or external sources. The product may be one that needs to be reordered, or it may be a new item for the company.
Step 2: Specific Need
The right product is critical for the company. Some industries have standards to help determine specifications. Part numbers help identify these for some businesses. Other industries have no point of reference. The company may have ordered the product in the past. If not, then the business must specify the necessary product by using identifiers such as color or weight.
Step 3: Source Options
The business needs to determine where to obtain the product. The company might have an approved vendor list. If not, the business will need to search for a supplier using purchase orders or research a variety of other sources such as magazines, the Internet or sales representatives. The company will qualify the suppliers to determine the best product for the business.
Step 4: Price and Terms
The business will investigate all relevant information to determine the best price and terms for the product. This will depend on if the company needs commodities (readily available products) or specialized materials. Usually the business will look into three suppliers before it makes a final decision.
Step 5: Purchase Order
The purchase order is used to buy materials between a buyer and seller. It specifically defines the price, specifications and terms and conditions of the product or service and any additional obligations.
Step 6: Delivery
The purchase order must be delivered, usually by fax, mail, personally, email or other electronic means. Sometimes the specific delivery method is specified in the purchasing documents. The recipient then acknowledges receipt of the purchase order. Both parties keep a copy on file.
Step 7: Expediting
Expedition of the purchase order addresses the timeliness of the service or materials delivered. It becomes especially important if there are any delays. The issues most often noted include payment dates, delivery times and work completion.
Step 8: Receipt and Inspection of Purchases
Once the sending company delivers the product, the recipient accepts or rejects the items. Acceptance of the items obligates the company to pay for them.
Step 9: Invoice Approval and Payment
Three documents must match when an invoice requests payment – the invoice itself, the receiving document and the original purchase order. The agreement of these documents provides confirmation from both the receiver and supplier. Any discrepancies must be resolved before the recipient pays the bill. Usually, payment is made in the form of cash, check, bank transfers, credit letters or other types of electronic transfers.
Step 10: Record Maintenance
In the case of audits, the company must maintain proper records. These include purchase records to verify any tax information and purchase orders to confirm warranty information. Purchase records reference future purchases as well.

For example, income is an independent variable because it causes and influences another variable consumption. In a mathematical equation or model, the independent variable is the variable whose value is given. In an experiment, it is the controlled condition (that is allowed to change in a systematic manner) whose effect on the behavior of a dependent variable is studied. Also called controlled variableexplanatory variable, or predictor variable.

For example, to find out if your weight depends on the amount of calories you consume, you could lower your caloric intake (calories is the manipulated variable) for a period of time and see how your weight changes in response.

ABC analysis
  
Definition
An analysis of a range of items that have different levels of significance and should be handled or controlled differently. It is a form of Pareto analysis in which the items (such as activitiescustomersdocumentsinventory items, sales territories) are grouped into three categories (A, B, and C) in order of their estimated importance. 'A' items are very important, 'B' items are important, 'C' items are marginally important.
For example, the best customers who yield highest revenue are given the 'A' rating, are usually serviced by the sales manager, and receive most attention. 'B' and 'C' customers warrant progressively less attention and are serviced accordingly.

Type of ABC analysis in which a 'critical value' (based on an item's perceived or known importance) is assigned to every item in an inventory control system.

just in time (JIT) inventory
  
Definition
Pull' (demand) driven inventory system in which materialsparts, sub-assemblies, and support items are delivered just when needed and neither sooner nor later. Its objective is to eliminate product inventories from the supply chain. As much a managerial philosophy as an inventory system, JIT encompasses all activities required to make a final product fromdesign engineering onwards to the last manufacturing operation. JIT systems are fundamental to time based competition and rely on waste reductionprocess simplification, setup time and batch size reduction, parallel (instead of sequentialprocessing, and shop floor layout redesign. Under JIT managementshipments are made within rigidly enforced 'time windows' and all items must be within the specifications with very little or no inspection. It was developed and perfected by Taiichi Ohno of Toyota Corporation during 1960s and 70s to meet fast changing consumer demands with minimum delays. See also just on time.
material requirements planning (MRP/MRP-I)

Computerized ordering and scheduling system for manufacturing and fabrication industries, it uses bill of materials data, inventory data, and master production schedule to project what material is required, when, and in what quantity. MRP phases orders for dependent-demand items (such as raw materialscomponentsparts) over a period to synchronize flow ofmaterials and in in-process inventories with production schedules. It also computes and tracks effect of hundreds of variables such as new orders, changes in various capacities, overloaded production centers, shortages, and delays by suppliers, and feeds financial data into the accounting system. In contrast to just in time inventory (a demand-pull production system), MRP is a plan-push system, and in contrast to advanced planning system (a forward scheduling system) it is a backward-scheduling sytem. production schedule
Definition
The timetable for the use of resources and processes required by a business to produce goods or provide services. A typical business will modify its production schedule in response to large customer orders, to accommodate resource changes, to reduce costs, and to increase overall production efficiency.

distribution requirement planning (DRP-I)

Systematic process for determining which goods, in what quantity, at which location, and when are required in meeting anticipated demand. This inventory related information is then entered into a manufacturing requirements planning (MRP-I) system as gross requirements for estimating input flows and production schedules.

supply chain management (SCM)

Management of material and information flow in a supply chain to provide the highest degree of customer satisfaction at the lowest possible cost.
Supply chain management requires the commitment of supply chain partners to work closely to coordinate order generation, order taking, and order fulfillment. They thereby create an extended enterprise spreading far beyond the producer's location.


Efficient Customer Response (ECR)
Definition
supply chain management system that requires the sharing of the retailer's sales and advertising information with the supplier which is used to generate orders shipped from the supplier based upon projected customer demand. The goal is to reduce inventory and associated handling costs at the retailer.

fourth party logistics (4PL)
Definition
Arrangement in which a firm contracts out (outsources) its logistical operations to two or more specialist firms (the third party logistics) and hires another specialist firm (the fourth party) to coordinate the activities of the third parties.
