1.    x^y + y^x  = 46. Find the values of x and y.

Ans: either 45 and 1 or 1 and 45.

2.    3 White chips, 7 Blue chips and 16 Green chips are there. If 2 chips are drawn at random in succession from the box then what is the probability that one is Blue and the other White?

Total no of chips is 26. The probability of getting a blue in the first take is 7C1/26C1 ie 7/26. After this take there will remain only 25 chips and the probability of getting a white chip is 3C1/25C1 ie 3/25. Thus the probability of picking a Blue first and White followed will be (7/26 x 3/25). The picking of the chips could be the other way also, white being first and blue being the second. In this case the probability works as (3/26 x 7/25). Hence the answer to the question is [ (7/26 x 3/25) + (3/26 x 7/25) ] ie 21/ 13 x 25

3.    A person works continuously for 8 days and gets the 9th day as his rest day. If he starts work on a Monday, then what day it would be of his 12th rest day.

Answer is Wednesday. Simple logic.

4.    How many liters of 90% concentrated Acid need to be mixed with 75% concentrated acid to get 30 liters of 78% concentrated acid?
Answer:  Let xlires of 90% concentrated acid be in the final mixture. Then the 75% concentrated acid will be (30-x) liters. We can now use a simple equation taking the % concentration in to account in the following manner:
90x + 75(30-x) = 30 x 78.  The value of x will be 6 liters.
5.    Three cars A, B and C are in the race. A is twice likely to win as B and B is thrice likely to win as C. What is the probability B will win the race if only one car wins the race?

Let probability of C winning be x. Then probability of B winning is 3x and probability of A winning 6x. Hence the probability of B winning the race is  3x/ 6x+3x+x
ie 3/10.

6.    A Cow and Horse were bought for Rs 2000.00. The Cow was sold for profit of 20% and Horse sold at a loss of 10%. If the overall gain in the transaction is Rs 40.00 then what is the cost price of Cow?
Answer: Let the price of Cow and Horse be C and H. Then we have C + H = 2000  (i)
Cow is sold at a profit of 20% or 1/5 C. Horse is sold at 10% loss or H/10. Thus we
have the second equation C/5 – H/10 = 40.00   (ii)
Equating (i) and (ii) you will get the value of Cow as Rs 800.00.
7.    The sum of three consecutive numbers of the four numbers A, B, C, and D are 4613, 4961, 5010 and 5099. What is the largest number among A, B, C, and D?
Solution:   Let the sum of the numbers be  A+B+C  = 4613
                                                                     B+C+D = 4961
                                                                     C+D+A = 5010
                                                                     D+A+B =  5099
Totalling all the four                             3(A+B+C+D) = 19683
                                                                 A+B+C+D  =  6561
It is now easy to find the values of A, B, C and D individually. The highest value
Is 1948.
8.    George printing press can print an edition of a newspaper in 12 hours while Paul’s printing press can print the same in 18 hours. What is the total no. of hours the press working together but independent of each other to print the same edition?
This question has two possible answers depending upon how you interpret the question.
Assuming the two press work together in producing the edition then the time taken will be 12 x 18 /12 + 18 ie 7.2 hours.
If they work independent of each other then the time taken will be 12+18 =30/2 ie 15 hours.
9.     Find the 87th number in the series 2, 10, 26, 50, ……..
Solution:  1st term = 12 + 1     2nd term = 32 + 1     3rd term = 52 + 1   4th term = 72 + 1
On this basis the 87th term will be 1732 + 1  ==  29930.
10.  What is the next number in the series 70, 54, 45, 41, ?
Answer : 40

                                                   --- x ---
