CAT - Numerical Ability - 4

CAT – Numerical Ability - 4

In the following questions find the value of ‘?’

1.            ? / 12 x 17 = 238
(a) 178                  (b)  218                 (c)  128                  (d)   208                (e)  None of these
Ans: (e)

( ?/12) x 17 = 238  --> ? = (238 x 12)/17 = 168

2.       135 - 924 / 132 x 6 = ?
(a)  93                    (b)  103                 (c)  43                    (d)   123                (e)  None of these
Ans:  (a)

? = 135 - (924/132) x 6 ->  135 - 42 = 93

3.       750.46 + 114.09 - 840.04 = ? - 13.09
(a)  37.06              (b)  63.78             (c)  37.60              (d)   67.38            (e)  None of these
Ans:  (c)

750.46 + 114.09 - 840.04 = ? - 13.09
--> 24.51 = ? - 13.09--> ? = 24.51 + 13.09 = 37.60

4.       64% of 750 / 4 = ? / 5
(a)  24                    (b)  48                   (c)  300                  (d)   600                (e)  None of these
Ans:   (d)

(64/100) x (750/4) = ?/5   --> 120 = ?/5  --> ? = 120 x 5 = 600

5.    Beena and Meena started a boutique investing amounts of Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 56,000 respectively. If Beena's share in the profit earned by them is Rs. 45,000, what is the total profit earned ?
(a)  Rs. 81,000    (b) Rs. 1,27,000   (c)  Rs. 72,000   (d)  Rs. 1,17,000                  (e)  None of these
Ans:  (d)

The investment of Beena and Meena is in the ratio 5 : 8
Assuming the total profit as ‘x’ then Beena’s profit is 5x/13.
Since 5x/13 = 45000 the total profit earned x -> 45000 * 13/5 = 1,17,000

6.    Simple interest accrued on an amount in eight years at the rate of 11% p.a. is Rs. 57,200. What was the principal amount?
(a)  Rs. 72,000    (b)  Rs. 82,000    (c)  Rs. 75,000     (d)  Rs. 65,000    (e)  None of these
Ans:  (d)

Simple interest = PNR/100.  Hence P = (S.I. * 100)/ N*R Applying the figure from the question we have
Principal = (57200 x100)/(8 x 11)= Rs 65,000

7.    Nandkishore gives 35% of the money he had to his wife and gave 50% of the money he had to his sons. Remaining amount of Rs. 11,250 he kept for himself What was the total amount of money Nandikishore had?
(a)  Rs. 63,750    (b)  Rs 75,000     (c)  Rs 73,650      (d)  Rs 72, 450    (e)  None of these
Ans:  (b)

After giving away 35% to his wife and 50% to his son, the remaining amount that Nandkishore had was 15%. This equals to Rs 11,250.
Hence the original amount ie 100% is ->  11250 * 100/15 = Rs 75,000.

8.    16 men can complete a piece of work in 7 days. In how many days will 28 men complete the same work ?
(a)  6 days            (b)  8 days           (c)  3 days            (d)  4 days           (e)  None of these
Ans:  (d)

M1 D1 = M2 D2  --> 16 x 7 = 28 x D2--> D2 = (16 x 7)/28 = 4 days

9.    Vandana sells an article for Rs. 3240 and earns a profit of 20 %. What is the cost price of the article?
(a)  Rs. 2,800       (b)  Rs. 2,820      (c)  Rs. 2,750       (d)  Rs. 2,700      (e)  None of these
Ans:  (d)

If the Cost price of the article is 100% then the Sale price is 120% ( Since the profit earned is 20%)
The article is sold for Rs 3,240 -> 120%
Hence the cost price is 3240 * 100/120 = RS 2,700

10. The 56% of a number is less than its 72% by 56. What is 70% of that number?
(a)  300                 (b)  235                 (c)  240                  (d)  350                 (e)  None of these
Ans:   (e)

Let the number be x.
Then the difference between 72% and 56% of that number -> 16% = 56.
If 16% of the number is 56 then 100% of the number is 56 * 100/16 = 350.
Since ‘x’ the value of the number is 350, 70% of the same would be 350 * 70/100 -> 245.
