15. A number of cats got together and decided to kill between them 999919 mice. Every cat killed an equal number of mice. Each cat killed more mice than there were cats. How many cats do you think there were?
Ans: 991.
It’s a simple trial and error method.
Let us assume the number of mice killed as 10,00,000. Since each cat killed equal number of mice there should 1000 cats and each cat would have killed 1000 mice. But, this is contrary to the information that each cat killed more number of mice than the number of cats.
The total mice killed were 999919. This is 81 less than our assumed figure of 10,00,000. Since each cat killed an equal number of mice, there should be 9 cats less than our figure of 1000 cats. Thus we have the number of cats as 991 and each cat killed 1009 mice which is more than the number of cats.

16. One dog tells the other that there are two dogs in front of me. The other one also shouts that he too had two behind him. How many are they?
Ans: Three.

17. A man ate 100 bananas in five days, each day eating 6 more than the previous day. How many bananas did he eat on the first day?
Ans: Eight.

Let ‘x’ be the number of bananas he ate on the first day. Then we have the following information.
Day 1                                                     he ate        x                         bananas
Day 2                                                     he hate     x + 6                  bananas
Day 3                                                     he hate                    x + 12                bananas
Day 4                                                     he hate     x + 18                bananas
Day 5                                                     he hate     x + 24                bananas
Thus is 5 days                                     he hate    5x + 60              bananas.
In 5 days he hate totally 100 bananas.
Hence, we have an equation    5x + 60 =100 solving we get the value for x as 8.
He ate 8 bananas on the first day.
