1.       Analyzing the good returns that Halocircle Insurance Pvt Ltd was giving, Ratika bought a one year, Rs 10,000 certificate of deposit that paid interest at an annual rate of 8% compounded semi-annually. What was the total amount of interest paid on this certificate at maturity?
Ans: Rs 816.00
Compound Interest is given by the formula ->   P(1+R/100)n – P  (Where P is the principal, R the rate of Interest and n the period of the deposit.)
In this case the annual rate is 8% but paid semi-annually. Hence R is half of 8% -> 4%. The certificate tenure in one year and the interest received is twice in the year. Hence n will be 2. Applying  these information in the above formula we get the answer as Rs 816.00

2.       Juan is a gold medalist in athletics. In the month of May, if Juan takes 11 seconds to run y yards, how many seconds will it take him to run x yards at the same rate?
Ans: 11x/y  (Very simple needs no explanation)

3.       A certain company retirement plan has a rule of 70 points that allows an employee to retire when the employee's age plus years of employment with the company total at least 70. In what year could a female employee hired in 1986 on her 32nd birthday first be eligible to retire under this provision?
Ans: Year 2005.
A tricky question and reader’s normal answer would likely be year 2024.
At the time of joining the female employee has already 32 points in the form of her age. She has to accumulate further 38 points before considered for retirement. Now comes the reasoning part. Every year she accumulates one point for service and another point for her age. In other words, she accumulates 2 points every year and would take 19 years of service to accumulate the required 38 points.
She joined in the year 1986 and will retire in 1986 + 19 -> 2005

4.       Homeowners aged 40 to 50 are more likely to purchase ice cream and are more likely to purchase it in larger amounts than are members of any other demographic group. The popular belief that teenagers eat more ice-cream than adults must, therefore, is false. The argument is flawed because the author _____
Ans: has failed in distinguishing between purchase and consumption. He is trying to correlate the large purchase of one demographic group to the consumption pattern of the other demographic group.

5.       Andalusia has been promoting the importance of health maintenance. From January 1, 1991 to January 1, 1993, the number of people enrolled in health maintenance organizations increased by 15 percent. The enrollment on January 1, 1993 was 45 million. How many million people (to the nearest million) were enrolled in health maintenance organizations on January 1, 1991?
Ans: 39.13 million (approx)
Let as assume the number of enrollment on 1st January, 1991 as 100. This has increased to 115 (15% increase) on 1st January 1993. Since we have taken the base as 100 we can assume the enrollment in 1993 as 115%.
115% is equal to 45 million.
Hence 100% ->  45 x 100/115 -> 39.13 million (Approx).
If the question were to say the enrollment increased by 15% every year then the answer will be different which please note.

6.       What is the lowest possible integer that is divisible by each of the integers from 1 to 7?
Ans: 420.
Find the LCM of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

7.       If the area of a square region having sides of length 6 cm is equal to the area of a rectangular region having width 2.5 cm, then the length of the rectangle, in cm is how much?
Ans: 14.4 cm.
The area of the square is 6 x 6 = 36 sq.cm. This is equal to the area of the rectangle.
The width of the rectangle is 2.5 cm. Hence, the length of the rectangle is
36/2.5 -> 14.4 cm.

8.       A tank contains 10,000 gallons of a solution that is 5 percent sodium chloride by volume. If 2500 gallons of water evaporate from the tank, in the remaining solution approximately what percentage of sodium chloride is there?
Ans: 6.67%
5% Sodium Chloride by volume in 10,000 gallons of solution is 500 gallons.
This remains as such though 2500 gallons of water evaporates and the present volume of solution is 10,000 – 2500 -> 7500 gallons. In this solution the volume of Sodium Chloride is 500 gallons.
Hence percentage of Sodium Chloride in the remaining solution is -> 500/7500 x 100 = 6.67% (approx).

9.       At the loading dock, each night crew worker loaded 3/4 as many boxes as each day crew worker had loaded on the day. If the night crew has 4/5 as many workers as the day crew, then what fraction of all the boxes loaded by the two crews did the day crew load?
Ans: 5/8
For convenience sake let us assume there are 5 workers in the day crew. Then the night crew will have 4/5 of 5 equaling 4 workers.
We now know the day crew are 5 workers and the night crew 4 workers.
Again for convenience sake let us assume that each day crew worker loads 4 boxes.
Then each night crew worker will be loading ¾ of 4 equaling 3 boxes.
Thus each day crew worker loads 4 boxes and each night crew worker loads 3 boxes.
Hence in a day, the total number of boxes loaded is
Day crew -> 4 x 5 -> 20 boxes.
Night crew   3 x 4 -> 12 boxes
Total                       -> 32 boxes.    The fraction of boxes loaded by day crew in this is
20/32 -> 5/8

10.   A bakery opened yesterday with its daily supply of 40 dozen rolls. Half of the rolls were sold by noon and 80 % of the remaining rolls were sold between noon and closing time. How many dozen rolls had not been sold when the bakery closed yesterday?
Ans: 4 dozen rolls
Supply received 40 dozen rolls of which 50% (half) were sold by noon.
Remaining rolls at noon 40 – 20 -> 20 dozen rolls. Of this 80% were sold by the evening.
80% of 20 -> 16 dozen rolls were sold by the evening.
Hence remaining rolls were ->  40 – 20 – 16 ->  4 dozen rolls.

11.   A dealer originally bought 100 identical batteries at a total cost of q rupees. If each battery was sold at 50 percent above the original cost per battery, then, in terms of q, for how many rupees each battery was sold?
Ans: 1.5q/100 (Simple. No explanation is required.)

12.   The price of lunch for 15 people was 207 pounds, including a 15 percent gratuity of service. What was the average price per person, EXCLUDING the gratuity?
Ans: 12 pounds.
Let ‘x’ pounds be the net price of lunch for 15 people. Including the 15% gratuity
The total price becomes -> x + 0.15x -> 1.15x pounds. This is equivalent to 207 pounds.
Hence ‘x’ is equal to 207/1.15 -> 180 pounds
Hence the average prices for each person -> 180/15 -> 12 pounds.
