(a)   S
(b)   T
(c)    I
(d)   E                     Ans: (c)

Arrangement of consonants: VTRS          Arrangement of Vowels:  EIOU
Final arrangement: VTRSEIOU.  Fourth from left is S and second to its right is I. Answer : I

2.    If ÷ means '-' '-' means '+' '+' means 'x' and 'x' means ' ÷' then what is the value of 16+5 -90 ÷15x 3 ?
(a)   165
(b)   185
(c)    98
(d)    62                 Ans: (a)

Basing on the information in the question, the given information 16 + 5 – 90 ÷ 15 x 3 is to be re-written as
16 x 5 +90 – 15 ÷ 3 Use the principle of BODMAS.  Answer is  16 x 5 = 80 + 90 = 170 – 5 = 165.

3.    Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to the group ?
(a)   Apple
(b)   Pear
(c)   Papaya
(d)   Orange       Ans: (d)      Orange is the only fruit that has a color by its name.

4.    Four of the following five are alike in a certain way and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to the group
(a)  48
(b)  54
(c)  42
(d)  46                   Ans: (d)     All the three other numbers are divisible by 3

5.    In a certain code language, 'go home now' is written as 'ho ka pa' and 'come home again' is written as 'ka da sa'. How is 'now' written in that code language ?
(a)   ka
(b)   ho
(c)   pa
(d)   ho or pa     Ans: (d)

Go home now is written as ho ka pa  and come home again is written as ka da sa.
The word home is common in both the sentences and the code ka is common in both the sentences and hence the code ka represents the word home.
The remaining two codes in the first sentence should mean either go or now.
Hence the answer is either ho or pa.

6.    Q is taller than P.H is not as tall as P. J and R are shorter than H. Who among them is the tallest?

11.   A and B alone can complete work in 9 days and 18 days respectively. They worked together. However  3 days before the completion of the work B left. In how many days the work was completed ?
(a)    13
(b)    8
(c)    6
(d)    5                    Ans: (b)

A in one day can do 1/9 work and B in one day can do 1/18 work. Together they can do in one day 1/9 + 1/18 = 1/6 work. Hence to complete the work they would have taken 6 days.
But, three days before completion, B leaves. In other words A and B together had worked for 3 days
And completed ½ work.
The remaining work was completed by A in (1/2) / (1/9) = 4 ½ days. Prior to this 3 days work was done. Hence the work was finished on the 8th day.

12.   The ratio of two numbers is 4:5 when the first is increased by 20% and the second is decreased by 20%, the ratio of the resulting number is
(a)    4:5
(b)    5:4
(c)    5:6
(d)    6:5                Ans: (d)

Let the initial numbers be 40 and 50. The first is increased by 20% and becomes 48. The second is decreased by 20% and becomes 40. The new ratio of the numbers are 48 : 40 or 6 : 5

13.    Two trains are running in opposite direction with the same speed. If the length of each train is 120 metres and they cross each other in 12 seconds, the speed of each train (in km/hours) is
(a)    72
(b)    10
(c)    36
(d)    18                 Ans: (c)

Let the speed of each train be ‘S’. As they are travelling in opposite direction the relative speed is the sum of their speeds = 2S.  The length of each train is 120 meters and the two trains to cross each other will have to travel a distance equal to sum of their lengths = 240 meters. To travel this distance the time taken is 12 seconds. Hence, in one second the train covers 20 meters = 2S. Hence S the speed of the train is 10 meters/second or 36 km/hour.

14.    A bag contains Rs.90 in coins of denominations of 50 paise, 25 paise and 10 paise. If coins of 50 paise, 25 paise and 10 paise are in the ratio 2:3:5, then the number of 25 coins in the bag is
(a)    80
(b)    120
(c)    100
(d)    135               Ans: (b)

Keeping x equivalent to one rupee, we have an equation 2X/2 + 3X/4 +5X/10 = 90
20X + 15X + 10X = 1800
Solving we have 45X = 1800 and value of X = 40 Applying this value we note the amount of 50P, 25P and 10P coins amount to Rs 40, Rs 30 and Rs 20. Hence the number of 25P coins is 30*4 = 120.

15.    Difference of two numbers is 1660. If 6% of one number is 8% of the other number, the smallest number is
(a)    7055
(b)    4980
(c)    3735
(d)    2076             Ans: (b)

6% of one number is 8% of the other number. Hence the ratio of the two numbers are 4 : 3 The difference between the numbers is 1660. Hence the value of the smallest number is 1660 * 3 = 4980.

16.  The average age of 15 student of a class in 15 years. Out of these the average age of 5 students is 14 years and that of the other 9 students is 16 years. The age of the 15th student is
(a)    11 years
(b)    15 years
(c)    15 years
(d)    14 years     Ans: (a)

The total age of 15 students = 15 * 15 = 225.   The total age of 5 students =  5 * 14 = 70
The total age of 9 students = 16 * 9 = 144. Thus the total age of 14 students = 70 + 144 = 214
Hence the age of the 15th students is 225 – 214 = 11.

17.    The product of two numbers is 4107. If the H.C.F of the numbers is 37, the greater number is
(a)    185
(b)    111
(c)    107
(d)    101               Ans: (b)   The two numbers are 111 and 37. (Can be answered from the choice)

18.  In an examination 80% of the candidates passed in English and 85% in Mathematics; while 75% passed in both English and Mathematics. If 45 candidates failed in both these subjects then the total number of candidates was
(a)    225
(b)    450
(c)    400
(d)    350               Ans: (b)
85% of the students passed in Mathematics and 80% passed in English. 75% of the students have passed in both the subjects. From this we have the following information:

Students passed in Mathematic alone       85% - 75% = 10%
Students passed in English alone                80% - 75% =   5%
Thus number of students who have passed the examination is  10% + 5% + 75% = 90%
Hence number of students failed in the examination is 10% which is given as 45. Hence the total number of candidates were 45 * 100/10 = 450.

19.    In a box, there are 10 white socks and 16 black sock. what is the minimum number of socks that a blindfolded man should take out to get one pair?
(a)    5
(b)    3
(c)    2
(d)    4                    Ans: (b)    Picking three socks would certainly provide a pair of socks of one color.

20.    10 goats jump over a fence one after the other in 10 minutes. Then how many goats will jump over the same fence at the same rate in one hour ?
(a)    60
(b)    54
(c)    55
(d)    61                 Ans:  (c)

This question is a twister and many would answer 60 as the answer. But please follow the explanation:

M G M G M G M G M G M G M G M G M G M

M represents Minute and G represents the Goat that jumps over. You will note that in 10 minutes only 9 goats actually jumps over and expanding this you have the answer that in one hour 55 Goats alone will jump over the fence.
