Idioms – 3

On cloud nine:            Feeling wonderful. When someone receives an unexpected award or reward he/she feel s wonderful and the happiness is reflected in their behaviour. The concerned person is said to be ‘on cloud nine’.

Like a Dog with twin tails:    A person who is very excited – Someone who becomes a proud parent to a boy/girl

With one’s back to the wall:   In a desperate situation

Happy Camper:                       One who is fully satisfied and contented in life.

A bolt from the blue:     A shocking and unexpected news

Over the moon:          Something similar to ‘on cloud nine’. One who has great feeling on achieving/receiving high laurels and rewards.

The white elephant:   Something that bleeds one’s financial resources like a car the maintenance of which costs huge money.

Paint the town red:    Celebrating life on happy occasions like New Year eve, birthday, anniversaries etc.

Blow the whistle:            Letting out information supposed to be kept secret

To come a cropper:         Failing disastrously in an activity or business

To be close fisted:           One who is miserly and reluctant to spend money

To hold the baby:            The thrusting of an unwelcome responsibility

A left handed compliment:    An insulting compliment to rile a person.

Put a damper on:             To discourage

Eat one’s words:              To rescind and take back one’s statement.
