The total age of 30 kids -> 30 x 9 -> 270. 
Including the teacher the number becomes 31 and the average 10.
Total age of kids + teacher -> 31 x 10 -> 310.
Hence the age of the teacher is 310 – 270 -> 40 years.

9.       A, B and C can complete a piece of work in 24, 6, and 12 days respectively. If they work together then in how many days the work will be over?
(a)    1/24 days             (b) 7/24 days      (c) 3 and 3/7 days             (d) 4days
Ans: (c)

A, B and C together in one day can complete ----  1/24 + 1/6 + 1/12 -> 7/24 work.
Hence, they will complete the whole work in 24/7 days ->  3 and 3/7 days.

10.   Two trains running in opposite directions cross a man standing on the platform in 27 seconds and 17 seconds respectively and they cross each other in 23 seconds. What is the ratio of their speeds?
(a)    1 : 3                        (b) 3 : 2                 (c) 3 : 4                  (d) None of these
Ans: (b)

Let the speed of one train be ‘X’ and the other train ‘Y’.
Then the length of the first train is 27X and the length of the second train is 17Y.
The trains running in opposite directions cross each other in 23 seconds. In this time they travel the length of both the trains.
Hence we have ->  (27X + 17Y)/ X + Y = 23  ( Length / speed = time)
Reducing the above we have -> 27X + 17Y = 23X + 23Y. Reducing further we get 2X = 3Y or
X/Y  = 3/2.
Hence the ratio of their speeds is  3 : 2.

11.   A & B are children of D. Who is the father of A? To answer this question which of the statements (1) and (2) is necessary?
(1)    C is the brother of A and son of C
(2)    F is the mother of B
