(a)    72
(b)    10
(c)    36
(d)    18                 Ans: (c)

Let the speed of each train be ‘S’. As they are travelling in opposite direction the relative speed is the sum of their speeds = 2S.  The length of each train is 120 meters and the two trains to cross each other will have to travel a distance equal to sum of their lengths = 240 meters. To travel this distance the time taken is 12 seconds. Hence, in one second the train covers 20 meters = 2S. Hence S the speed of the train is 10 meters/second or 36 km/hour.

14.    A bag contains Rs.90 in coins of denominations of 50 paise, 25 paise and 10 paise. If coins of 50 paise, 25 paise and 10 paise are in the ratio 2:3:5, then the number of 25 coins in the bag is
(a)    80
(b)    120
(c)    100
(d)    135               Ans: (b)

Keeping x equivalent to one rupee, we have an equation 2X/2 + 3X/4 +5X/10 = 90
20X + 15X + 10X = 1800
Solving we have 45X = 1800 and value of X = 40 Applying this value we note the amount of 50P, 25P and 10P coins amount to Rs 40, Rs 30 and Rs 20. Hence the number of 25P coins is 30*4 = 120.

15.    Difference of two numbers is 1660. If 6% of one number is 8% of the other number, the smallest number is

(b)    4980
(c)    3735
(d)    2076             Ans: (b)

6% of one number is 8% of the other number. Hence the ratio of the two numbers are 4 : 3 The difference between the numbers is 1660. Hence the value of the smallest number is 1660 * 3 = 4980.

16.  The average age of 15 student of a class in 15 years. Out of these the average age of 5 students is 14 years and that of the other 9 students is 16 years. The age of the 15th student is
(a)    11 years
(b)    15 years
(c)    15 years
(d)    14 years     Ans: (a)

The total age of 15 students = 15 * 15 = 225.   The total age of 5 students =  5 * 14 = 70
The total age of 9 students = 16 * 9 = 144. Thus the total age of 14 students = 70 + 144 = 214
Hence the age of the 15th students is 225 – 214 = 11.

18.  In an examination 80% of the candidates passed in English and 85% in Mathematics; while 75% passed in both English and Mathematics. If 45 candidates failed in both these subjects then the total number of candidates was
(a)    225
(b)    450
(c)    400
(d)    350               Ans: (b)
85% of the students passed in Mathematics and 80% passed in English. 75% of the students have passed in both the subjects. From this we have the following information:

Students passed in Mathematic alone       85% - 75% = 10%
Students passed in English alone                80% - 75% =   5%
Thus number of students who have passed the examination is  10% + 5% + 75% = 90%
Hence number of students failed in the examination is 10% which is given as 45. Hence the total number of candidates were 45 * 100/10 = 450.

(a)    60
(b)    54
(c)    55
(d)    61                 Ans:  (c)

This question is a twister and many would answer 60 as the answer. But please follow the explanation:

M G M G M G M G M G M G M G M G M G M

M represents Minute and G represents the Goat that jumps over. You will note that in 10 minutes only 9 goats actually jumps over and expanding this you have the answer that in one hour 55 Goats alone will jump over the fence.

RBI - English Language - 1

RBI – English Language - 1
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words have been printed in bold to help you locate while answering some of the questions.

The importance of communication skills cannot be underestimated, especially so, in the teaching - learning process. Teaching is generally considered as only fifty percent knowledge and fifty percent interpersonal or communication skills. For a teacher, it is not just important to give a lecture rich in content that provides abundant information about the subject or topic in question, but a successful teacher develops an affinity with, an understanding of, and a harmonious interrelationship with her pupils. Building rapport becomes her primary task in the classroom. But what exactly is rapport? Rapport is a sympathetic relationship or understanding that allows you to look at the world from someone else's perspective. Making other people feel that you understand them creates a strong bond. Building rapport is the first step to better communication - the primary goal of all true educators. Communication skills for teachers are thus as important as their in-depth knowledge of the particular subject which they teach. To a surprising degree, how one communicates determines one's effectiveness as a teacher. A study on communication styles suggests that 7% of communication takes place through words, 38% through voice intonation and 55% through body language. Much of teaching is about sending and receiving
messages. The process of communication is composed of three elements: the source (sender, speaker, transmitter or instructor), the symbol used in composing and transmitting of the message (words or signs), and the receiver (listener, reader or student). The three elements are dynamically interrelated since each element is dependent on the others for effective communication to take place. Effective communication is all about conveying your message to the other people clearly and unambiguously. It's also about receiving information the others are sending to you, with as little distortion as possible. Doing this involves effort from both the sender and the receiver. And it's a process that can be fraught with error, with messages muddled by the sender, or misinterpreted by the recipient. When this isn't detected it can cause tremendous confusion, wasted effort and missed opportunity.

Good communication skills are a prerequisite for those in the teaching profession. Carefully planned and skillfully delivered messages can issue invitations to students that school is a place to share ideas, investigate and collaborate with others. Effective communication is essential for a well-run classroom. A teacher who is able to communicate well with students can inspire them to learn and participate in class and encourage them to come forth with their views, thus creating a proper rapport. Although this sounds simple and obvious, it requires much more than a teacher saying something out loud to a student. They must also realize that all students have different levels of strengths and weaknesses.

TCS Questions - 10

TCS Questions – 10

1.       In a 400 meters race A gives B a start of 7 seconds and beats him by 24 meters. In another race of same distance A beats B by 10 seconds. The speeds of A and B are in what ratio?

Answer: 10 : 8
In the first race after giving a start of 7 seconds to B, A beats him by 24 meters.
In the second race without any start to B, A beats him by 10 seconds. Comparing the two we observe that in a time of 3 seconds B runs 24 meters or in one second B runs 8 meters.
Hence for covering 400 meters B would have taken 400/8 = 50 seconds.

But, A beats B by 10 seconds. Hence the time taken by A to cover the distance of 400 meters was 50 – 10 = 40 seconds.  Thus the speed of A was 400 / 40 = 10 meters/ sec.

The ratio of speed between A and B is  10 : 8

2.       What is the maximum number of half-pint bottles of cream that can be filled from a 4 gallon can of cream? ( 2 pints = 1 quarter and 4 quarters makes one gallon)

Answer: 64
4 Gallons equals 4 * 4 = 16 quarters.  16 quarters equals 16 * 2 = 32 pints. No of half pint bottles equals 32 * 2 = 64.

3.       If the operation ^ is defined by the equation  x ^ y = 2x + y, then what is the value of ‘a’ in the equation  2 ^ a = a ^ 3.

Answer: 1

X ^ y = 2x + y    applying this we have 2 ^ a = 2*2 + a = 4 + a     (i)
We are informed that 2 ^ a = a ^ 3
Based on the main equation,    a ^ 3 will be 2 * a +3 = 2a + 3   (ii)

From (i) and (ii) we can arrive the value of ‘a’ as 1

4.       If the price of an item is decreased by 10% and then increased by 10%, the net effect of the change on the price of the item is how much?

Answer: Decrease of 1%
The answer can be arrived by using the successive percentage change formula. The net effect in percentage change of an item when increased/decreased first by x% and then decreased/increased by  y% is given by the formula:

Effective percentage change is            x + y + xy/100.   Applying the information in the question we have the value – 1% (decrease)

5.       If ‘m’ is an odd integer and ‘n’ an even integer, which of the following is definitely odd?

a)      (2m+n)(m-n)             b)  (m+n^2)+ (m-n^2)    c) m^2 + mn + n^2           d) m + n
Answer: both (c) and (d)
Remembering the following may be of some help:
Odd ± Odd = Even,   even ± even = even,     odd ± even = odd
Odd * Odd = Odd,     even * even = even,    even * odd = even
6.       All faces of a cube with an eight inch edge are painted red. This cube is cut into smaller cubes of two inches. How many of the smaller cubes will have paint on exactly one face?

Answer: 24                    The following will help the reader in answering questions of this type.

Total number of small cubes                       n^3   (where ‘n’ is the number into which    the main cube is cut)
In the above question an eight inch edge cube is cut into 4 smaller two inch edge cubes.

Hence the number of cubes is 4 ^ 3 = 64.
Smaller cubes that are coloured on three sides will always be  8
( the top four corner pieces and the bottom four corner pieces)
Number f cubes coloured on two sides is given by 12 (n-2)
Number of cubes coloured on one surface is given by 6 * (n-2)^2
Number of cubes having no colouring at all is given by (n-2)^3
On the above basis the answer for the question is 12 * (4 – 2) = 24.
7.       Two cyclists are training on an oval track. One of the cyclist the professional takes 4 minutes for completing a full lap. The other cyclist , the learner takes 6 minutes to complete a lap. After how much time the two cyclists will again meet each other at the starting point?

Answer: 12 minutes.
The professional will reach the starting point after every 4 minutes.
The learner will reach the starting point after every 6 minutes.  Thus,
The Professional  will be at the starting point after   -  4, 8, 12, 16, 20 …. Minutes.
The learner will be at the starting point after   -- 6, 12, 18, 24, …………  Minutes.
From the above it could be seen that after 12 minutes both the cyclists are at the staring point.

8.       M, N, O, and P are different individuals. M is the daughter of N. N is the son of O. O is the father of P. Among the following statements which one is true?

a)      M is the daughter of P
b)      If B is the daughter of N, then M & B are sisters.
c)       If C is the grand-daughter of O, then C and M are sisters.
d)      P and N are brothers.
Answer: B          ( Please draw a family tree and arrive at the answer)
9.       The sequence {An} is defined by A1 = 2 and An+1 = An + 2n then what is the value of  A100 ?

Answer: 9902

We know  A1 = 2 and An+1 = 2n

Hence,     A2 = A1 + 1 =  2 + 2(1)  =  4
                 A3 =  A2 + 1 =  4 + 2(2)  =  8
                 A4 = A3 + 1 =  8 + 2(3)  = 14       Thus the terms goes like   2, 4, 8, 14, 22, …….

The differences between the terms goes like  2,4,6,8, …………..  The series is like a quadratic equation.

Suppose:     An = an2 + bn + c            then we have  A1 =   a +   b +  c = 2
                                                                                                 A= 4a + 2b + c = 4
                                                                                                 A= 9a + 3b + c = 8

Solving these three we get values for     a = 1,   b = -1,   c = 2
An = an2 + bn + c  substituting the values of a, b and c in the equation
We have An = n2 – n + 2       Now substituting  100 in the place of ‘n’ we get the value

A100 = 10000 – 100 + 2 =  9902

10.   Find the number of rectangles ( a square is also considered as a rectangle) in the following figure.

Answer:  1638

There are 13 vertical lines and 7 horizontal lines. For forming a rectangle, two horizontal lines and two vertical lines are required.

The two horizontal lines can be selected in 7C2 ways…..21 ways
The two vertical lines can be selected in 13C2 ways  …… 78 ways.

Thus the total number of rectangles in the above figure is  7C2 * 13C2 = 21 * 78 = 1638
