TCS Questions - 6

TCS Questions – 6

1.    If the ticket sales ‘S’ of a company increases by 25% from standard sales to 60 tickets sold, then what is the value of 60 – S?

Answer: 12

The normal sales is S. From the question it is noted that S + 25%S = 60

ie  5/4 S = 60 Hence S value is 48.

60 – 48 = 12.

2.    In a certain department store there are four sizes of specific shirts. It has 1/3 as many small shirts as medium shirts. It also has ½ as many large shirts as small shirts. If the store were to have as many x-large shirts as large shirts, then what is the percentage of medium shirts in the store? (I have reframed the question for better understanding)

Answer: 60%

Let S be small shirts, M medium shirts, L large shirts and X x-large shirts

Then from the information we have the following:

S = M/3.   L = S/2 = M/3x2  = M/6.   Since L = X  we note that X = M/6

Total shirts in the stores is   S + M + L + X  substituting the respective values we get

The total number of shirts as M/3 + M + M/6 + M/6  =  5M/3

Percentage of Medium shirts to total shirts is M/(5M/3) x 100  =  60%

3.    A computer store regularly sells all stock at a discount of 20% to 40%. If an additional discount of 25% is allowed on the discounted price during a special sale, what would be the lowest possible price of a part costing $16?

Answer:   $7.20

The original cost is $16 and the lowest price would be at maximum discount of 40%.

After this discount the cost of the part comes down to $9.60. An additional discount of 25% is allowed on this price. So the lowest possible price for the part would be

$9.60 - $ 2.40 = $7.20.

4.    The owner of a hobby store needed to calculate the percentage of customers who purchase wood glue. On completion of a survey, he observed that 60% of the people who entered the stores purchased an item and 15% of them purchased wood glue. What percentage of people who entered the store purchased wood glue?

Answer: 9%.

These type of questions are best answered assuming a convenient figure to start. Let us assume 100 people entered the store. Of these 60 people purchased an item. 15% of the 60 people purchased wood glue.

Hence percentage of people who purchased wood glue is (15 x 60)/100  ie 9%

5.    From 7 A.M. to 11 A.M. it rained 2.25 inches. From 11 A.M. the falling of rain increased to 1.25 inches every two hours. How many inches of rain had fallen at 5 P.M. that day?

Answer: 9.75 inches.

Up to 11 A.M. the amount of rain fallen was 2.25 inches. Between 11 A.M and 5 P.M. the time difference is 6 hours. The rain fall was increasing at the rate of 1.25 inches every two hours.

Between 11 A.M. and 1 P.M. the rain fall was 1.25 inches.

From 1 P.M. to 3 P.M.            the rain fall was 2.50 inches

From 3 P.M. to 5 P.M             the rain fall was 3.75 inches

Thus the total rain fall from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. was 7.50 inches. Up to11 A.M. it was 2.25 inches. Hence the total rain fall from 7 A.M. to 5 P.M. was 9.75 inches.

6.    Pradeep combines two mixtures of milk and water. He mixes the first mixture of 40 litres containing 20% water with second mixture of 60 litres containing 30% water. What is the percentage of water in the combined mixtures of milk and water?

Answer: 26%

Quantity of water in 40 litres mixture is 20%   ie   (40 x 20) / 100 = 8 litres

Quantity of water in 60 litres mixture is 30%   ie   (60 x 30) / 100 = 18 litres.

Thus the total quantity of water in 100 litres of mixture is 8 + 18 = 26 litres or 26%

7.    Average weight of 47 balls is 4 gm. If the weight of the bag is taken into account the average weight per ball increases by 0.3 gm. What is the weight of the bag?

Answer: 14.1 gm

It is a very simple question. The increase in the average weight of the ball is due to the weight of the bag. Hence the weight of the bag is 0.3 x 47 = 14.1 gm8.

8.    A and B invest in a business in the ratio 3 : 2. If 4% of the profit earned goes to charity, then A’s share of profit is Rs 282.00 What is the total profit earned?

Answer: Rs 489.58

4% of the profit is given for charity. So, remaining profit is 96%. A’s share on this is 3 parts out of 5. A’ share is 96 x 3/5 = 57.6% This is equal to Rs 282.00

Hence, the total profit is (282 x 100) / 57.6  = Rs 489.58

9.    An inlet pipe can fill a pool in 5 hours. An outlet pipe can drain a full pool in 6 hours. If both these pipes were opened simultaneously in an empty pool, the water would be filled up to what level after 5 hours?

Answer: up to 1/6 of the pool level.

The inlet pipe take 5 hours to fill. So in one hour it will fill 1/5 of the pool.

The outlet pipe can drain in 6 hours. So, in one hour it can drain 1/6 of the pool.

When both the pipes are opened, the pool gets filled in I hour: 1/5 – 1/6 = 1/30.

In five hours the pool will get filled up to 1/30 x 5 = 5/30 or 1/6.

10.  Two 27.2 kohm resistors are in series combination. This series is in parallel with another resistor of 29.3 kohm. What is the total resistance?

Answer: 19.0432 kohm

Two 27.2 kohm resistors are in series . The total resistance of this is

27.2 + 27.2 = 54.4kohm.    Let this be R1

Now R1 (54.4 kohm) is in parallel with R2 (29.3 kohm)

Then, the total resistance is (R1 * R2) / (R1 + R2)

(54.4 * 29.3) / (54.4 + 29.3) = 19.0432 Kohm
